Tha Pantanal
Campo Grande

The city of Campo Grande was officially founded in 1899, but only became the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul when the Mato Grosso state was split in two in the 1970's. Camp Grande, along with Corumba, is the gateway city into the Southern Pantanal, and there are excellent tour packages that combine the Pantanal and Bonito in their itinerary. The city itself does not merit having much time spent in it, except for a well-worth visit to the Dom Bosco Museum.

Transportation
The Campo Grande Airport is 5 miles from downtown. Vasp, TAM, Gol, and Varig airlines serve flights from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The bus station, located off of the main avenue Afonso Pena, has connecting routes to Bonito, Corumba, and Cuiaba. Routes vary from 5 - 10 hours long.
Buses that run along Avenida Afonso Pena towards the shopping mall are convenient to use.

Taxis are cheap and only required for the further shopping destination and restaurants along this route, and for transportation to and from the airport.

The Tourist Office is on Av. Noroeste 5140 and has a lot of useful information on tours and lodges.

Sights
Museu Dom Bosco
Museu Dom Bosco Holds a great collection of ancient fossils, shells, butterflies, even a large anaconda, and has a detailed ethnographic section and display of the many local Indian tribes' artifacts.

Shopping
Across from the tourist office is the bustling Camelôdromo street market. Along with clothing and leather goods, you can find a variety of pirated CDs and software.

Lodging
A list of lodges in the surrounding area is listed in the Lodging section.

Activities and Tours
Each pousada and lodging area works with a tour operator that provides the many excursions and exploring options into the surrounding Pantanal. A variety of package deals are available, accounting for the length of your trip ; a popular option in Campo Grande is to split your stay between the Pantanal and near-by Bonito. Remember that Campo Grande is just the take-off city into the Pantanal, and most lodging facilities are situated within the actual wetland; thus there are no tours specific to Campo Grande itself. Included here are the descriptions of the general types of tours offered.

Tour Options
Most packages include in their price transfer to and from the lodge and Campo Grande airport, along with most meals and activities. There are also many combination packages, combining Bonito and Pantanal.
