A room in the MAM museum in Rio Rio de Janeiro has a variety of museums and art galleries to visit that offer a rare opportunity to see current and past Latin American painters. There are also museums commemorating important Brazilians, such as the museum dedicated to the best-known composer in South America, Rio native Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM)
This museum displays the best of fine art throughout Latin America. It houses over 4,000 contemporary works from Brazilian artists and over 2,000 pieces by foreign artists. Exhibits frequently change and many international exhibitions display at this museum.

Museu Historico Nacional
The history of Brazil is shown through artifacts, maps, and photographs from the day of the country's birth to the present in this museum. Very well curated, this is a museum that is well worth the few hours it will take to enjoy it.

Museu Nacional de Belas Artes
This grand, national museum houses an impressive collection of over 10,000 works of European and Brazilian art, concentrating on the 18th and 19th century.

Museu Chacara do Ceu
The museum was originally built as a mansion to house the artistic tastes of the wealthy Raymundo Castro Maya. This is a collection of European paintings, Brazilian 19th century landscapes, and Chinese pottery.

Museu do Indio
Houses one of the most important collections on Brazilian Indian tribes. A good portion of the exhibits are outside.

Museu Internacional de Arte Naif do Brasil
Two of the largest Native Art paintings in the world are on display here. There are also paintings of daily lives of Brazilians in this museum.

Museu de Arte Contemporanea - Niteroi
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the contemporary art museum looks like a big spaceship. The observation gallery inside the museum offers a stunning view of Rio. Contemporary Brazilian artists exhibit here regularly.

Museu Villa-Lobos
Dedicated to the life of the great Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Outside there is a small amphitheater which holds musical events that can be attended for just a few dollars.
