City Center and Attractions

It is best to obtain a walking map of Petropolis and enjoy the walk and the fresh, humidity-free air. The map points out the main sights (11 in total) within the town. Such a map can be obtained in the Tourist Information Booth, in the center of town.

Museu Imperial
This is Petropolis' top museum, a site that was the former summer palace of Dom Pedro II. Wander through the salons and absorb the charming paintings and drawing that depict 19th century Rio, amidst the rooms and furnishings of that time. In the gardens you will also find is a collection of old horse-drawn coaches.
Rua da Imperatriz 220.
Tues-Sun 11 am - 5 pm.

Museu Casa de Santos Dumont
This is a museum dedicated to Santos Dumont: the world's first aviator and great innovator. The museum is Dumont's former house, and has most of his possessions on display: medals, books, notebooks, and more. It also includes the first hot shower in Brazil that was invented by Santos Dumont: and it was heated by alcohol.
Rua da Encanto 22, Petropolis.
Tues-Sunday 9 am - 5 pm

Casa de Petropolis
A beautifully preserved house with lavish designs and furnishings. Guides that work on site are enthusiastic and just loaded with information. There are weekly concerts held here that usually take place on Saturday nights at 8pm.
Rua Ipiranga 716, Petropolis.
Tues- Sun 11 am - 7 pm

Cristal Palace
The Cristal Palace was constructed out of crystal, just as its' name states, in France. This is where Princess Isabel granted freedom certificates to the many slaves in 1888. It was built by Dom Pedro as an exhibition hall, but became the venue for balls and concerts and is still used today. It has been completely re-done, with only the crystal chandelier to account for the name. It currently stands proudly in Iron and Glass attire.
Parca da Confluencia at Rua Alfredo Pacha

An annual festival celebrating German culture on the last week of June and first week of July. Dedicated to the important role of German people in the beginning days of the Petropolis.

Rua Teresa
This is Brazil's top shopping destination. Since there are so many clothing manufacturers on the outskirts of the Petropolis, stores here offer a wealth of goods at retail prices. The best time to shop is after Wednesday, when stores open early and close late. Monday through Wednesday stores open only after 2 p.m.
